Advent Music Service, December, 2011. Matthew Larkin, piano; Alex Joubert, tenor.

On Sunday, December 11, 2011 the Southminster Choir presented an Advent Music Service. The offerings from this service went entirely to the Christmas Hamper Project which operates out of Centretown United Church. Over $1,500 was raised for this worthy project! The anthem performed in the clip below,The Christmas Gloria, was commissioned by an anonymous arts patron in 2011. Inspired by the traditional Gloria text, the text of this version was adapted by the composer for use in the modern United Church of Canada setting. The text, together with the use of the pop musical style, attempts to answer the need for contemporary reflections on classic theology and sacred musical forms. Thanks to the expanded Southminster Choir for such a beautiful rendition in our Advent service, December 11, 2011.

On Saturday October 22, 2011, Southminster United Church hosted an evening of choral and orchestral masterpieces centered on the much-loved music of Antonio Vivaldi. The well known Four Seasons, featuring violin soloist Uliana Drugova, was performed by Ensemble Arkea and the well-known Gloria for choir and orchestra featured the Southminster Choir and soloists.

On March 26, 2011, the choir joined forces with Montreal’s Ensemble Arkea, under the direction of Dina Gilbert, for a presentation that showcased Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, and for which our sanctuary was filled nearly to capacity.
